Our Work

Power BI Solution for Jersey Fire and Rescue Service

Who was the client?
Jersey Fire and Rescue Service deals with a broad range of incidents in Jersey including fires, road accidents and emergencies at sea, as well as providing preventative guidance and advice.

Client requirements
The Deputy Fire Chief and his team contacted our Business Intelligence team in Jersey as they were looking to develop their internal reporting capability to provide greater depth of analysis. They required an intuitive and visual Operational Dashboard with the capacity to vary date ranges, look at trends, provide automated updates and allow user-self-service to drill down levels of information based on individual reporting needs.

As the Fire and Rescue team focuses on being time-efficient in all areas of administration, user friendliness and ease of use were key to their requirements. The team also wanted this to be a quick engagement.

What did the project involve?
Understanding that the most efficient system to meet the Fire and Rescue Service’s requirements would be Microsoft Power BI, one of the C5 Business Intelligence Consultants used the software to create a bespoke Operational Statistics Dashboard. Microsoft officially states that “Power BI is a suite of business analytics tools to analyse data and share insights. [You can] (m)onitor your business and get answers quickly with rich dashboards available on every device.”

Every incident that the Fire and Rescue team attends must be reported on, and so C5 built the dashboard to highlight any areas within the reporting process that must be completed before analysing logged reports. The dashboard was designed to allow for a side-by-side comparison of weekly, monthly and annual date ranges so that the team can see if they are meeting their annual targets to reduce the number of fires in Jersey.

Scope of project
Over a period of eight-to-ten days, C5 built a bespoke dashboard tailored to the Fire and Rescue Service’s explicit requirements. Senior Consultant, Anna Philpott, then trained the Fire and Rescue Service team to use the solution over five-to-six days.

Project success
Finishing on time and budget, the project was a great success and the Fire and Rescue team has now begun developing their own systems of use. One of the real advantages of Power BI is that it will begin to provide further insight intuitively.

Station Commander, Marc Le Cornu, commented:
“Our customer relationship with C5 Alliance was brilliant. From the moment we asked for what we wanted, the ease in dealing with the company was great. It was a breeze to get to where we are now. Power BI helps us pick out trends from our data so we can focus our resources. Having data every night means we can have an accurate record of exactly how many incidents we’ve been to this year and can break it down into areas that we may need to discuss and review. In the future, we would like to roll the Power BI system out into all our business areas including training recording, team KPI live reporting, fire safety inspections, health and safety incidents, and HR information.”
